A Strategy for Material Testing and Data Management for the Automotive Industry
This paper will be presented in full at the Carhs Automotive CAE Grand Challenge, taking place April 10-12, 2013.

Today, CAE is integrated with modern automotive product development. This creates new challenges for departments that support new product development. In the materials arena, the testing is elevated to much higher levels of sophistication and precision to accommodate the complex material models used in CAE. It is no longer simple matter to convert raw data into material model parameters. We present an end-to-end strategy that gives automakers a well-managed pathway to transforming to simulation-based design. We operate a quick-turnaround expert material testing lab to support high-end CAE and product development. We provide a data management software designed specifically to capture and display material data of any complexity. The software can transform raw material data into material parameter files for most commonly used simulations. The CAE Modeler software is of adequate sophistication to fit equations to data, visualize material models along with raw data, and output material cards. Examples for high strain-rate crash material modeling will be presented.

DatapointLabs Continues to Grow

DatapointLabs is proud to be recognized as one of the Top 100 Engineering Companies featured on the 2012 Inc. 500|5000 list of the fastest-growing private companies in the United States.

We are testing more materials than ever, over 1800 annually. We are adding new equipment, implementing new methods to measure and model complex material properties more accurately, as well as offering enhanced data management capabilities. We will be talking about all of this in detail at upcoming events; the abstract of one presentation is included in this issue for reference.

We are also adding people to support our growth. Three new staff members have joined the company recently:

  • Marcia Swan joined DatapointLabs as Marketing Manager in February 2013. She is responsible for managing partner alliances, improving customer relationships, bringing consistency to the variety of communications disseminated by the company, and enhancing the company's brand image across all media. Marcia is an experienced technical communicator whose career spans more than 20 years in marketing communications, user assistance, and technical publications management roles. Outside of work, Marcia enjoys reading and all kinds of puzzles, cycling, hiking, practicing yoga, and traveling.
  • Tom Oliveri joined DatapointLabs in February 2013 as a Lab Technician. Tom spent 25 years in commercial, military and aerospace manufacturing operations and is knowledgeable in ISO, MIL, AS, and FAA specifications. Away from work, Tom and his wife, Sandy, enjoy their three horses (Bud, Diego and Bounce) and two dogs (Kia Sophia and Country Charm).
  • Nicholas Simpson joined DatapointLabs in March 2013 as a Sales Associate. He also will spend time in the lab gaining hands-on experience with the testing operation. Nick is a recent graduate of Keuka College with a Bachelor of Science degree in business management. He previously attended Clarkson University's mechanical engineering program where he learned the fundamentals of science and engineering. In his spare time, Nick enjoys traveling, taking in races at Watkins Glen International, cooking, outdoor activities and spending time with his dog, Mojo.
